Darklight

Festival of Independent Creativity
23rd – 26th April 2015

Darklight is the foremost festival for independent creativity in Ireland. It has been associated with new cinematic practices and creative technology for the past 15 years. Darklight has its origins in digital culture and new paradigms in film production, distribution and marketing. Each year, a new area in creative thinking and practices is explored during Darklight's three day festival.

Darklight celebrates and encourages new work and provides a platform for emerging filmmakers and artists, while introducing new work to a core audience of cultural influencers and innovators.

Darklight is distinctive as it provides a unique experience for its audience, who can engage with speakers and contributors in an open and shared creative environment.

It showcases experimental work that attracts the curiously cultural and is not readily shown elsewhere in Ireland.

It is our mission to stay diligently informed of the practices synonymous with the continued evolution of moving image storytelling and share this with an engaged audience.

Darklight's vision is curating a programme that continues to capture the imaginations of the next generation of innovators.

Navigating Darklight 2014 Re:boot

What's Up Doc?

In a world where deceit is easy, the truth is a commodity. Traditionally, documentary filmmakers have taken caution to clarify the boundaries between drama and documentary, fact and fiction. But a new wave of hybrid documentary cinema is now blurring those boundaries. We will explore the craft and ethics of these new approaches through screenings of new, ground-breaking and seminal works alongside a discussion series.

Digital Storytelling

Does Digital Storytelling provide a viable alternative for us to tell our stories? Darklight will take a look at what new technologies, thinking models and platforms are available for exploring narratives. We are putting Digital Storytelling in the spotlight and investigating whether or not the dynamic worlds of documentary, journalism, coding and art are becoming increasingly indistinguishable.

Gamechangers

Darklight’s Gamechangers series celebrates decisive moments in the development of cinema as an artform. Scorsese’s ‘Goodfellas’ kicks us off, presenting a gamechanging masterclass in technique, from voiceovers to freeze frames. Inspiring the Auteur movement we present ‘The Searchers’, while in ‘Breathless’ we witness Jean-Luc Godard throwing out the rule book andchanging cinema forever.

Short Film

From its inception Darklight has always valued the short film format like no other, spotlighting emerging talent, merging disciplines and incipient artistic vision. This year Darklight presents two selections of award-winning shorts never before screened in Ireland, and a series of short documentaries. We also welcome Future Shorts in association with Happenings and Le Cool Dublin, a compelling selection of international shorts that journey through the eyes of filmmakers from around the world.

Smithfield Square

We're bringing Darklight onto the Plaza with our very own 100-seater Cinemobile, screening award-winning shorts and feature premiers.  Get on board! and experience shorts and features throughout Darklight festival dates.

Block T

Block T is Darklight's HQ and partnering-venue, hosting workshops, the Darklight symposium, film screenings, parties and the Darklight Box-Office.

Generator

The Generator describes itself as much much more than a hostel, and yes it is!  Generator has its own intimate cinema auditorium which will host Darklight's fringe screenings and workshops.  Generator is also our venue for the oh-so-good Darklight Saturday Night Party.

Lighthouse Cinema

Darklight's Opening Gala takes place in Lighthouse Cinema as well as daily screenings throughout the festival.

Third Space Cafe

We are transforming Third Space Cafe to a special screening-room by night and our Think-Tank engine room by day.
