Darklight presents a potted history of childrens' animation. The programme will include material drawn from the classical Hollywood era of the 40's and 50's, through the 'made-for-television' cartoon explosion of the 60's and 70's and up to contemporary digitally produced animation. While the programme is geared primarily towards children, adults of all ages will get the chance to revisit some of the most popular cartoon characters of their youth.
BOD
Bod was created by Michael and Joanne Cole in the early 1960's, initially just to read to their children. The first Bod books were published in 1965 and ten year later Bod was to become an animated TV series tailored for pre-school children. The surreal zen-like nature of Michael's crafted tales and the abstracted simplicity of Joanne's illustrations, form the basis for the 13 episodes which were shown repeatedly through the late 1970's as part of the BBC's lunchtime viewing schedule, 'Watch With Mother.' Throughout the 80' and 90's Bod started to develop a cult status among those whose lives he had touched as children and who remembered him with great affection, and although Michael and Joanne Cole are sadly no longer with us, Bod is one of those enduring characters that you feel will always stay alive. In 2005 Bod was voted number 48 in the Nations Favourite 100 Cartoons on Channel 4, he can still be seen in his original form on Nickelodeon and there are currently plans for a new Bod animated TV series.
