We Are Poets – 22 Oct @ 20.00-22:00 – Screening Room 1
WE ARE POETS intimately follows six young poets over the course of one very special year, as they are chosen to represent the UK at Brave New Voices, the most prestigious poetry slam competition in the USA. From their inner city lives to a stage in front of the White House in Washington DC, the poets must prepare for a transformational journey of a lifetime.
Cinematic, honest and deeply personal, WE ARE POETS is a testament to the power of creativity, community and the dynamism of young people. Anyone tempted to dismiss today’s youth as politically apathetic better pay heed: here is electrifying evidence to the contrary.
This special screening will be followed by a performance from two of the Leeds Young Authors: Rheima Robinson and Kadish Morris.

Cutbacks – 22 Oct @TBA – Studio 5
David Quin (aka DT Finn) started the Cutbacks internet project in 2009, as an animated satirical response to Irish politics. Over thirty stop-motion characters have regularly featured on the Cutbacks series, including Seamus Heaney, Brian Cowen, Colonel Gaddafi and Jedward. The series is updated twice weekly, using a simple stop-motion digital pipeline. David Quin won Best Animation in the 2010 Galway Film Fleadh, with the short film ‘Mister Heaney, a wee portrait’ which featured some of the Cutbacks characters
David Quin will screen many Cutbacks videos and will describe the ‘cutbacks’ origination, creative process and production pipeline, including some Youtube tips, tricks and insights.
He’ll reveal the potentials and difficulties, successes and failures of creating a no-budget animated internet series.
