Forum 3. ANIMATING FILMS AND GAMES: From Dioramas to Real Time FX : The Impact of game technology on Film production.

filmbase 3.15 - 4.30pm

FOCUS:

The Playstation 1 released in 1994 was followed in 2000 by the Playstation 2 which was four time faster. The specifications for the Playstation 3 are 35 time faster then the Playstation 2. In terms of processing power, that makes it as powerful as 1% of the human brain. At this rate, the likelihood is that the Playstation 5 will be as powerful as the human brain if not more so. So as game technology converges with audio-visual filmmaking, new opportunities for storytelling are emerging. Filmmakers and animators are getting new and more sophisticated tools to achieve their vision. Users are getting in on the action too as gaming technology allows them to indulge in ever realistic worlds and even create films of their own.

So where to from here? How exactly is technology developed for gaming impacting film, SFX, animation and motion graphics and is it opening up new possibilities for the imagination?

What are the possibilities of Real Time technology?

Are we really seeing a move towards low budget CGI (Hoodwinked and Terkel In Trouble) What technologies are being developed to bridge the gap between film and games? Is the Machinima craze actually a vision of things to come?
