Forum 5. Memory Technologies

filmbase 2.30 - 3.45pm

FOCUS:

Did you know that CD’s and DVD’s have a life expectancy of about 10 years, so now most of what we first burned to disc is quickly fading into oblivion. What are the issues we are facing as contemporary creators of film, art, writing, media and music. What does this mean for preservation of ‘creative’ cultural production, who is responsible? This event will investigate current and future technologies for archiving creative digital content. To look at this issue from a long term Perspective, a historical perspective and a practical one, to raise awareness in Irish media artists, filmmakers, designers etc. and try to come up with some practical suggestions for them of how or why to preserve their creative work. What new policies are currently being developed by archives, museums and collectors in regard to acquisition preservation and standards for the development of ‘new collections’. The event will also situate an analysis of the human implications of memory technology through examples provided by artists, filmmakers and researchers involved in digital media.
